A 54-year-old Naas man has been jailed for six years after admitting to transporting over €3.2 million worth of cannabis.
Francis Cox from Hazelmere pleaded guilty to possessing 161.5kg of cannabis found in a van he was driving on the M50 on March 20, 2024.
Gardaí, acting on an operation, stopped the van and discovered boxes of cannabis in the rear.
Cox, according to the Irish Times, initially denied knowing the van's contents, stating he was paid €100 to transport it and feared for his safety.
He told Gardaí he was on disability allowance, recovering from a motorbike accident and heart bypass, and facing financial difficulties.
Judge Martin Nolan described Cox, who has no prior convictions, as a “low-level operative” and noted there was no evidence of financial gain before sentencing him.
"It seems he was in financial straits at the time. He was prey to temptation," Judge Nolan said.
