Naas Mayor Defends Ballycane School Cycle Lane Project Amidst Some Local Opposition

The proposed installation of a cycle lane and extended footpaths in a Ballycane estate has vexed a local woman.

Some residents, like May, were surprised to learn about the cycle lane project, which they claim they were not informed about until recently.

She said there have been long-standing problems in the area, including damaged vehicles, blocked driveways, and emergency services being unable to access the road due to parked cars.

According to kIldare County Council, the reconstruction and widening of the footpath outside Holy Child National School on Lacken View in Naas is part of a broader initiative to promote safe, active travel for students and pedestrians.

They said the project includes several key enhancements designed to improve safety and accessibility in the area.

Speaking on Kildare Today, however, May recounted a recent incident where an ambulance had to use a trolley to transport a woman in labour because it couldn't reach her house.

She believes the new project will exacerbate existing problems.

Cllr and Mayor of Naas, Fintan Brett, responded to May's concerns, stating that such schemes are always advertised in local papers and on various websites.

He acknowledged that door-to-door leaflet drops might have been beneficial and should have been considered.

However, he defended the project; he said it aims to enhance safety for children walking and cycling to school by segregating them from traffic.
