Kildare North Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly, who obtained the figures, has called for reform, arguing that drivers who cannot afford an annual lump sum should not be penalised.
More than €100 million has been collected in motor tax surcharges since 2022 from drivers who pay quarterly or half-yearly instead of annually.
New figures show that in 2024 alone, €35 million was paid in surcharges - €22.7 million from quarterly payments and €12.4 million from half-yearly payments.
Similar amounts were collected in 2022 (€35.7m) and 2023 (€35m).
