Gardaí say penalties for knife possession and assaults have been significantly increased, with maximum prison terms now ranging from seven to ten years.
Most violent incidents with knives happen in residential settings rather than on the street.
That's according to an analysis carried out by Gardai covering the period the 10-year period 2015-2024.
Robberies involving knives have fallen - down 40 percent in retail spaces and 35 percent in open spaces over the past five years compared with the previous period.
Nationally, Gardaí have seized almost 19,000 knives since 2015, averaging five every day.
Seizures have risen by 28 percent in recent years, while prosecutions for knife possession are up 14 percent.
Hospital figures show more than 1,700 people admitted after knife assaults in the past ten years, with admissions peaking in 2023.
