Mescal was nominated for his role in the film Aftersun.
Half the nominations for leading actor in tonight's British Academy Film Awards are Irish.
Maynooth's Paul Mescal is nominated for Aftersun, Daryl McCormack is up for 'Good Luck to You Leo Grande' and Colin Farrell is in the mix for 'The Banshees of Inisherin' which has TEN nominations and is tipped to win Best Film.
It's other stars, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon, have also recieved nominations.
Two other films set in Ireland - 'Wonder' and 'An Irish Goodbye' are also nominated for awards and 'An Cailín Ciúin' is the first Irish language film to be nominated.
