Man Arrested For Threats To Slice Irish Babies To Appear In Court Again On 5 June

Misinformation had been circulating online claiming the man was in Newbridge yesterday when he was actually still in custody.

A 50-year-old man appeared before a special sitting of Portlaoise District Court today, facing charges related to threatening messages he allegedly posted on social media saying he wanted to slice up Irish babies.

Beniamin Petre, who currently has no fixed address, is charged under the Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Act 2020, as well as the recently enacted Criminal Justice (Hate Offences) Act 2024.

Detective Garda Mark Russell confirmed that Petre was arrested yesterday in Rathmiles, Abbeyleix, Co Laois, under Section 5 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1977.

He was then taken to Abbeyleix Garda Station, where he remains in custody.

Detective Russell said he is awaiting guidance from the Director of Public Prosecutions and indicated that additional charges may follow.

Petre’s solicitor, Josephine Fitzpatrick, informed the court that her client was not applying for bail and consented to remain in custody.

Judge Andrew Cody remanded Petre in custody, scheduling his next appearance via video link at Portlaoise District Court on 5 June.

The judge also ordered that Petre receive an urgent medical assessment while in custody.
