Man had been treated at Dublin hospital for self-inflicted injuries

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of Ashling Murphy's murder.

The 23 year-old was murdered while out for a run on the bank the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co. Offaly last Wednesday.

The man had been treated in St. James' Hospital since last Thursday, after suffering self-inflicted injuries.

He was arrested earlier and detained under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act - allowing for him to be questioned for up to 24 hours without charge.

He is being held at Tullamore Garda Station.

Those periods of questioning can be paused for resting periods, including to sleep overnight, meaning the 24-hour questioning time allowed to detectives may unfold over several days.

Gardaí monitored the suspect while in hospital for the past 5 days, waiting for doctors to deem the individual medically fit to be discharged.

Ashling Murphy's funeral was held earlier this morning.
