Local TD Encourages Students To Apply Early For SUSI Grant

Wicklow TD Jennifer Whitmore is encourages all Students to make sure that they have their application for the SUSI grant submitted early.

Whitmore also reminds students that there are increased thresholds for SUSI this year so more students can apply than ever before.

“The Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) is Ireland’s national awarding authority for further and higher education grants and I want to remind all Wicklow students both current and incoming for September to make sure that their SUSI grants are submitted on time.

"There is a common mis-conception that a student has to be allocated a place to apply and this is not the case.”

"Last year alone, nearly 66,000 students benefitted from the SUSI grants," she explained.

“Funding is available to eligible students in approved full-time courses at PLC, undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Ireland and in some cases, to students studying in the UK or EU.

"With the increase in thresholds, a high percentage of students progressing on to, or in further education, would be eligible and should make an application to SUSI.

“There are two types of grants available, the Maintenance Grant and the Fees Grant. The Maintenance grant covers the day to day living expenses of the student and is paid directly into the student’s account. The Fee grant is paid directly to the college or university.”

Applications are accepted up until October in 2023 but there is a priority closing date of the 6th of July and all students are urged to apply early.

The application process is smooth with students in the first instance registering their account on the SUSI website.

“I know most incoming students for the academic year commencing September 23 are concentrating on completing their leaving Cert exams, however I would encourage everyone to commence the application process," she added.
