Some teachers returning from Australia are not taking up teaching because it's not considered a viable career option.
Local schools are struggling to recruit and retain teachers due to a lack of housing and high rents.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Damhnait Uí Ruairc, Chair of Board of Management at Gaelscoil Ruarí in Maynooth, said some teachers returning from Australia are not taking up teaching because it's not considered a viable career option.
She said Gaelscoil Ruarí is finding it difficult to hire because of high living costs, lack of housing and high rents.
"There's a lot of people ringing me and saying that they know people, teachers who have gone off to Australia, which is fine. It's great for people to get the chance to go abroad and get more experience, but they're not working as teachers abroad.They're picking up new skills and they're coming back here and not even going into teaching because financially they're not able to stay in Dublin or Kildare or wherever," she said.
