Currently, the bins are emptied three times a week, but that may be reduced to two
A local councillor is calling on Kildare County Council to increase the number of times a week that public bins are emptied in Sallins.
At present, bins are currently emptied on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.
However, Cllr. Carmel Kelly says that having checked other towns and villages, she feels as though Sallins is not receiving an adequate service.
The call from Cllr. Kelly comes as the new Litter Management Plan, which is currently out for public consultation, proposes to reduce the number of times the bins are emptied to just twice a week.
The population of Sallins currently stands at 6,269 and the village has 18 bins.
Speaking to Kfm, Cllr. Kelly questioned why population is not being taken into account.
“In Rathangan for example, with a population of 3,263, the bins are collected three times a week. The same in Monasterevin, with the population at 5,307” she said.
“I must stress this is not an us against them when it comes to the other towns and villages, but I have to ask, why is population size not being taken into account?” she added.
By further comparison, Clane with a population of 8,152, Kilcock with a population of 8,674 and Prosperous with a population of 2,413 see their bins emptied 6 times a week – Monday to Saturday.
Cllr. Kelly has urged locals in Sallins to make a submission on the new Draft Litter Management Plan before the deadline on July 9th at 5pm.
