Speaking to Kfm, Kildare woman Maria Crowe, who lives with a painful bladder condition, has to use a toilet every thirty minutes, day and night.
Kildare South Labour TD Mark Wall has introduced a Bill to give legal status to “No Wait Cards” for people with chronic or invisible illnesses who urgently need access to a toilet.
The cards are currently issued by groups such as Crohn’s & Colitis Ireland, but they have no legal standing.
The Bill would require shops and businesses with staff toilets to allow access to card holders.
Deputy Wall says the proposal is a practical measure to support people who cannot wait to get home to use a bathroom.
Crohn’s & Colitis Ireland has welcomed the move, calling it an important step in recognising the needs of people living with chronic conditions.
He said he has Chrohn's disease so his very familiar with the need for such a card to be recognised.
