Fiona O'Loughlin says its processes are a "deterrent" to new teachers.
There are calls in Kildare for a root and branch reform of the Teaching Council.
Fianna Fáil Senator, Fiona O'Lough, says many teachers are being met with "roadblocks" when registering with the council, and receive "no support and guidance"
The Kildare senator is Vice Chair of the Oireachtas Education Committee, and says it is "vital" that Ireland attracts and retains teaching talent, but "registration with the teaching council is becoming a deterrent."
“It is clear that we need to review the Teaching Council and its processes. We need to ensure that teachers who are qualified are not deterred from choosing to come back to Ireland to teach. We can’t afford to sacrifice bureaucracy for teaching quality, it is vital that we review and reform the Teaching Council.”
