Kildare Road Users Among 750 Caught Speeding On National Slow Down Day

Gardai highlight cases of motorists taking risks near Athy.

Kildare road users were among over 750 drivers caught speeding during National Slow Down Day.

The national Garda campaign - supported by the RSA - ran from 7am yesterday to 7am today.

Over the course of the 24 hours, over 163 thousand vehicles were checked.

755 of those were found to be over the speed limit.

Gardai have highlighted two examples of motorists putting themselves and others at risk near Athy.

One motorist was found to be travelling at 98km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the R448 Road in Inchaquire.

Another at 95km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the R418 Aghanure.

Two notable cases were in County Cork - where one driver was detected doing 194 kilometres per hour in 100 kilometre zone on the N25 in Castlemartyr.

Another was caught travelling at 112 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone on Main Street, Charleville.

Gardaí continue to appeal to motorists to slow down to save lives - after an almost 10-year high in road deaths last year.
