Kildare People Cohabiting With Partners Urged To Know Their Rights.

Cohabiting couples do not possess the same legal rights and obligations as married couples or civil partnerships.

Couples living together, but who are not married or in a civil partnership, are being urged to know their rights.

Cohabiting partnerships doe not have the same legal rights or obligations are those in marriages or civil partnerships, particularly in terms of inheritance.

Cohabiting is defined as:

Not married to each other and
Not in a registered civil partnership and
Not related within the prohibited degrees of relationship (broadly speaking, relationships which would make them ineligible to marry each other) and
Living together in an intimate and committed relationship

Helen Coughlan is a solicitor based in Newbridge and Chair of the Law Society's Family and Child Law Committee.
