Kildare County Council Says "No Excuse" For Dog Fouling - But Won’t Provide Bag Dispensers In Maynooth

Social Democrats Councillor Peter Melrose had sought a pilot scheme to provide bag dispensers at public bins, with quarterly refills to encourage clean-up.

Kildare County Council has rejected a call for dog waste bag dispensers in Maynooth and Kilcock - insisting the existing “Any Bag, Any Bin” approach is enough.

Social Democrats Councillor Peter Melrose had sought a pilot scheme to provide bag dispensers at public bins, with quarterly refills to encourage clean-up.

But the Council says it won’t be doing it - stating it has neither the staff nor resources to maintain or restock dispensers.

Officials say it remains the owner’s responsibility to bring a bag, pick up after their dog, and bin it - adding there is “no excuse” for leaving dog waste on footpaths, roads or green areas.

They also noted that anything from nappy sacks to reused plastic bags will do.

Cllr Melrose said he was not happy with the council's response and that he will continue to raise the issue.

He cited a solution launched by Tipperary County Council, where dispensers have been installed at convenient locations.

Locals there can download an app to view the location of mapped bins throughout the county.
