Justice Minister Helen McEntee has appointed a Fine Gael councillor to a €150,000-a-year role as a county registrar.
Ms McEntee brought a memo to Cabinet on Tuesday seeking permission to appoint Kildare County Councillor Mark Stafford to the quasi-judicial role.
Mr Stafford, who is serving his second term as a Fine Gael councillor, was chosen by Ms McEntee from three candidates proposed by the Public Appointment Service (PAS) to fill the role of County Louth registrar.
The position comes with a €150,000 salary and a €8,979 probate allowance.
