Kildare Council Plans Age-Friendly Housing At Former Refugee 'Rest Centre' In Newbridge

Kildare County Council has announced a significant shift in the use of Liffey Lodge, Newbridge, which had been operating as a 'Rest Centre' for Ukrainian refugees since March 2022.

The centre was originally established to provide temporary protection and accommodation to individuals fleeing the war in Ukraine.

However, as part of the government's ongoing programme to consolidate its existing portfolio of accommodation, the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY) has confirmed that Liffey Lodge is no longer required for this purpose.

A relocation process has now begun for the remaining residents, and Kildare County Council is preparing to re-purpose the site to address local housing needs.

Liffey Lodge, which was initially purchased with housing funds, is now included in the council’s Housing Delivery Action Plan.

It will be redeveloped into Age-Friendly Housing, a move that is expected to offer valuable right-sizing opportunities for older residents in the Newbridge area.

The council’s Capital Housing Delivery Team will engage with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLGH) to move forward with the housing proposal.
