Kildare Among Country’s Top Christmas Spenders As Average Outlay Tops €2,000

Men leaving their Christmas shopping to the last minute helped break festive spending records last year.

Kildare shoppers ranked among the biggest Christmas spenders in the country last year, according to new AIB card-spending data, with the average customer in the county spending just over €2,000 in the run-up to Christmas.

Only Wicklow spent more, topping the national league table at €2,022 per customer, while Kildare followed closely at €2,005.

Meath was next at €1,997, with Dublin also showing strong festive spending at an average of €1,947 per person.

Nationally, the average Christmas spend stood at €1,880.

The data also highlights clear differences between how men and women spent in the final weeks before Christmas.

Women accounted for the bulk of spending in department stores, clothing and groceries, and were the higher spenders on every day from December 1st to 19th.

However, that pattern reversed as Christmas approached.

Men overtook women on 11 of the final 12 days of December, driven by heavier spending on jewellery, hardware, electrical goods, and food and drink in pubs and restaurants.

Men leaving their Christmas shopping to the last minute helped break festive spending records last year according to AIB.

The bank's Spend Trend survey found December 23rd was the busiest shopping day of 2024, with 114 million euro spent on that day alone.

Overall, 3.9 billion euro was spent by AIB customers last December with even more expected this year.
