The man who became the first road fatality in Ireland this year had been due to stand trial accused of deliberately driving over a man who suffered life-changing injuries during an altercation outside a pub.

Keith Higginbotham from Nurney, died when the car in which he was a passenger, crashed on the M7 motorway near Newbridge, on New Year’s Day.

Eamon Dillon in the The Irish Independent reports his case had been listed at Naas Circuit Court this week for a trial date over the alleged ‘hit and run’ outside Martin's pub in Kildoon, which now won’t go ahead.

At a previous District Court hearing, Higginbotham had denied deliberately reversing a VW Passat over the man, who suffered severe injuries.
