McDonnell claimed in court that he was a victim of "gross fraud".
Tom McDonnell, elected as an Independent Cllr in the local elections in June, has been ordered to pay compensation over criminal damage to a house in Dublin two years ago.
McDonnell (62) from Newbridge, who had been convicted of damaging windows at a residence in Rockville Crescent, Blackrock, Dublin, on September 6, 2022, had been remanded on bail awaiting the hearing.
According to the Irish Independent, Judge Anne Watkin ordered McDonnell to return next year with an additional €1,250 to supplement the €1,000 he brought to court.
McDonnell's lawyer, John McCoy BL, explained that compensation was complicated by an ongoing civil dispute.
McCoy noted that an insurance company had already settled the damages for €16,900.
However, the injured party had also lost a no-claims bonus, incurring a €2,250 cost this year and potential future losses.
Judge Watkin dismissed the civil dispute as irrelevant to the case, stating, "I’m not concerned about the civil matter."
She also pointed out that the injured party's losses were a direct result of McDonnell's actions.
