The Centra store, which served as the village’s only shop, closed on June 7 following unsuccessful efforts by the owner to expand or relocate.
The site of Johnstown’s last shop could be set for redevelopment, with plans now in place to convert the former Centra premises into offices.
A planning notice has been erected by the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation, confirming intention to lodge an application to Kildare County Council for a change of use from retail to office and ancillary accommodation at the site.
The charity already has office space above the former store.
The Centra store, which served as the village’s only shop, closed on June 7 following unsuccessful efforts by the owner to expand or relocate.
Its closure left the village of 1,320 residents without access to basic retail services.
Once plans are formally lodged with the council, locals will have five weeks to inspect them and make submissions.
