NPHET has indicated the current requirement may cease at the end of this month.

One of Ireland's largest teachers unions says it is too soon to change the rules for children who are close contacts of a confirmed Covid 19 case.

Yesterday NPHET indicated the current requirement for children to be tested and to restrict their movements may cease at the end of this month.

At present over 10,000 children are absent from Irish schools after being designated close contacts.

The INTO says the National Public Health Emergency Team should should wait until mid October before making a decision on close contacts in schools.

Joe McKeown is President of the Irish National Teachers Organisation.

He joined Clem Ryan on Friday's edition of Kildare Today, in an interview which also covers Ireland's last place OECD ranking for investment in education.
