Intel's Leixlip Plant Workers Faces Uncertainty As Answers May Not Come Until July

Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke said he is continuing to engage with Intel.

Workers at Intel's Leixlip plant could have to wait until July to learn if their jobs will be impacted by the company's reduction of its global workforce.

The company will continue to focus investment on the manufacturing of semiconductor products, which is the primary activity in its Leixlip site.

The chip maker says it wants to 'streamline' the organisation and cut down on management layers so decisions can be made more quickly.

Kildare North TDs James Lawless and Joe Neville will provide further details on this morning's Kildare Today show.

Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke said he is continuing to engage with Intel.

"It is likely to be several weeks before detail is available on the impact of these cost reduction measures," Mr Burke said.

"While we await further specifics on potential downsizing, which is an incredibly anxious time for Intel's staff, it is positive that the company have stated that they will continue to focus investment on their core business, the manufacturing of semiconductor products. This is the primary activity in Ireland," he said.

In a memo to employees, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said the company needs to get back to its roots.

"There is no way around the fact that these critical changes will reduce the size of our workforce."

He added: "As I said when I joined, we need to make some very hard decisions to put our company on a solid footing for the future."

Speaing on Kildare Today, Kildare North TD Joe Neville said Liexlip has seen significant investment leaving workers here well positioned to ensure the longevity of the plant.
