There is, however, a shortage of foster care placements.

The Irish Foster Care Association says there is a growing number of children with complex needs entering foster care.

This is happened amid a shortage of people and families willing to provide foster care homes.

Tusla, the child and family agency, has launched a number of initiatives to recruit new foster carers this year, but the high number of children in care continues to pose a challenge.

The Tusla report for March, the most recent available, showed 65% of children in care are in general foster care, while 26% are in relative foster care.

Catherine Bond is CEO of the Irish Foster Care Association.

She joined Ciara Noble on Wednesday's edition of Kildare Today.
