Dylan's mother Catherine Killalee is now calling for the maximum sentence for dangerous driving causing death to be increased from 10 years to at least the 14-year limit similar to Northern Ireland.
In a powerful interview on Kildare Today, the mother of a young man killed by a speeding driver said she feels like "the ghost".
Dylan Killalee Maher died aged 21 at the R110 Naas Road, Clondalkin on November 12, 2023, when he stepped out of a car to collect his jacket from the boot.
Cameron Cooper (23), of Ballyfermot Road, Dublin, pleaded guilty this year to dangerous driving causing his death.
Dylan's mother Catherine Killalee is now calling for the maximum sentence for dangerous driving causing death to be increased from 10 years to at least the fourteen-year limit similar to Northern Ireland.
Ms Killalee said that no driver who killed someone while driving dangerously has ever received more than a lengthy prison sentence.
She, along with the Parc road safety group, will be outside the Dail this afternoon calling for change.
Ms Killalee said Cameron Cooper was a learner driver when her son was killed.
She said his nine-year driving disqualification began as soon as he entered prison, which she has described as "ridiculous".
Imposing sentence, Judge Ronan Munro said Cooper was well spoken of by his employer.
He also noted how Cooper had a brother with additional needs who would, according to his family, be hard hit by his absence.
He imposed a sentence of five years and three months, with twelve months suspended.
