Gardaí Probe Whether Fatal Edenderry Firebombing Was Directed From Prison By Kildare-Offaly Gang

Gardaí say the victims were entirely innocent and that none of those in the house had any involvement in criminal activity.

Gardaí are investigating if a fatal firebomb attack on a family home in Edenderry that killed a four-year-old boy and his great-aunt was directed from inside Midlands Prison.

The petrol bomb was thrown through a downstairs window on Saturday night, claiming the lives of four-year-old Tadhg Farrell and 60-year-old Mary Holt.

A third woman remains in hospital with serious injuries.

It is understood that Gardaí are probing if the attack was carried out by a criminal gang operating mainly across Kildare and Offaly, and are investigating whether it was directed from inside Midlands Prison.

Gardaí say the victims were entirely innocent and that none of those in the house had any involvement in criminal activity.

A man with past links to the address is currently before the courts in connection with a significant drugs seizure.

Gardaí are looking at whether the home was targeted due to an alleged incident involving the man while in custody.

Crime journalist with the Irish Independent Paul Williams said even when criminals are behind bars they continue to operate.

He said such crimes are a "mutation" of the drugs trade impacting hundreds of families "every day".
