From Ross And Rachel To Pizza Toppings: Kildare's New Way To Tackle Cigarette Butt Litter

Already rolled out in Waterford City, Tramore and Dungarvan, the so-called ballot bins feature customisable questions, with voting left open to smokers.

'Were Ross and Rachel on a break?’ or ‘Pineapple on Pizza?’

These are just some of the questions Kildare smokers could be asked in a bid to encourage them to dispose of their cigarette butts.

Already rolled out in Waterford City, Tramore and Dungarvan, the so-called ballot bins feature customisable questions, with voting left open to smokers.

Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer said cigarrette butts are a real problem across the county.

She said any initiative that encourages smokers to discard of their cigarrette butts is welcome.

"We only have to walk our streets to see that it's a problem. It takes 13 years for a cigarette to break down. Ballot bins are interactive and hopefully they work."

Kildare County Council said the Transportation Department and Environment Department will work together to identify suitable locations to trial the Ballot bins.
