Former Newbridge Priest Paul Dempsey Takes Up New Role As Auxiliary Bishop in Dublin Diocese, With Focus On Youth Engagement

Pope Francis has appointed former Newbridge parish priest Bishop Paul Dempsey as Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin.

Up until now he has been Bishop of Achonry in Sligo.

Dempsey was appointed to the parish cluster of Naas, Sallins and Two Mile House in 2009, before moving to Newbridge in August 2014.

The following year, Dempsey was appointed parish priest in Newbridge and simultaneously administrator in Caragh and Prosperous.

He is expected to focus on rejuvenation and connecting with the youth in Dublin.

In a statement, he said: "Though I was born in Carlow, the Cathedral town of Kildare and Leighlin Diocese, I am no stranger to the Archdiocese of Dublin. My family moved from Carlow to Athy in the Archdiocese when I was a child. We lived in Athy for a number of years. It was there that I received my Confirmation from Bishop Donal Murray when he was an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese."
