Mr Durkan confirmed he would receive his full pension entitlement
Former Fine Gael and Kildare North TD Bernard Durkan is set for an exit package of almost €90,000 within a year.
The Irish Independent is reporting that the former TD's services would mean he is eligible for a lump sum of €18,946 and cushioning payments worth €71,049, but will be able to draw his pension.
Mr Durkan gave 42 years of consecutive public service to Dáil Éireann, making him the Dáil's longest serving TD.
He was eliminated in the final count for Kildare North that saw the last three seats filled.
Mr Durkan confirmed he would receive his full pension entitlement.
“I have always held the view that everyone is entitled to the redundancy, whatever it is,” Mr Durkan said.
“I’ve not done any calculations. It only comes once. I believe, in some way, it compares with the private sector. In any event, you get it once and that’s an end to it.
“I didn’t look at [the pension papers], I don’t know the detail, I just signed the forms,” he said in Leinster House.
In total, €7m will be paid out in termination lump sums, parachute payments, pension lump sums and pensions to retiring and defeated TD - with an annual recurring cost to the taxpayer.
