A young Monasterevin boy with spina bifida has been left waiting 18 months for follow-up assessment appointments to monitor his condition - despite being told the wait would be just one year.

They are carried out by a team at Temple Street, now part of Children's Health Ireland (CHI).
Eddie's mother Lisa Brett fears the long gap between appointments could allow complications to develop unnoticed.
“He’s supposed to see the whole team to make sure everything is on track,” she said. “Eighteen months between assessments is far too long. Without regular monitoring, there’s a real risk of problems being missed," Ms Brett told Kfm.
She said she was originally told that the period in between appointments would be a year.
Eddie underwent major orthopaedic surgeries and now requires regular reviews to manage his long-term health. While his condition is currently stable, his mother says the extended delay is adding unnecessary anxiety.
She said she is already expecting "a fight" when her son does need possible surgery down the line.
Ms Brett recently attended the funeral of young Clondalkin boy, Harvey Morrison, who died on July 29th.
Harvey had scoliosis and spina bifada.
In 2024 he finally received the first of two spinal surgeries after being on a waiting list for numerous years,
Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald says the improvement in his condition was remarkable but was too late.
She has now written to Tanaiste Simon Harris to ask him to meet Harvey's parents.
She said the delays were intolerable and tragically limited what could have been achieved if the surgery had been carried out within the four month target limit set down by the then Health Minister Simon Harris.
She says the State completely failed Harvey and Simon Harris should have met with them previously.
At present - 131 children are still actively waiting for spinal surgery.
