A young man whose dangerous driving caused the death of his best friend in July 2023 has been jailed for six-and-a-half years.
After crashing into a truck on the Dublin Road at Celbridge, 22-year-old Jake Kelly, of Ballyfermot Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin, fled the scene.
Jake Kelly was driving so fast when he crashed into the back of a heavy goods truck that was stopped at some traffic lights that the truck was shoved forward by 1.4m.
The impact forced the truck’s trailer to open, emptying a fresh load of hot tarmac onto the bonnet and passenger side.
Kelly left the scene without telling anyone that his best friend - 22-year-old Ross Rice was in the car.
His body was found buried under the tar a couple of hours later.
Kelly was 19 at the time.
He had no driving licence and was uninsured.
He had been smoking cannabis a few hours before getting behind the wheel.
He said the only reason he was driving his friend’s car that night was because Mr Rice was disqualified.
The judge heard he was genuinely remorseful and ashamed for leaving the scene.
She jailed him for six-and-a-half years.
