Extended Free Travel Scheme Opens Applications, Offering Accessibility Boost From July

Drivers who have a license and are medically certified as not fit to drive can also avail of the scheme.

Applications have opened for the extended Free Travel Scheme, which comes into effect in July.

Kildare residents aged 17 to 66 - who have never been able to drive due to disability, or have been medically certified as unfit to drive for 12 months or longer - are eligible.

Those who fit the criteria are eligible to access free travel on all public transport provided by the state, such as buses, local links, trains, and Luas.

Drivers who have a license and are medically certified as not fit to drive can also avail of the scheme.

It's expected to benefit around 32,000 people this year - with Epilepsy Ireland saying it's a huge step forward for those with the condition.

Wayne O'Reilly, who has epilepsy, says he's dependent on public transport.
