Reeling In The Years

Early Plans For Social Housing Begin On Long-Vacant Sarto Road Site In Naas

The site, once home to multiple families, has remained undeveloped for over 25 years, despite earlier intentions to repurpose the area for community use.

Early stages of a proposal for new social housing are now underway on the Sarto Road site in Naas, which was cleared 25 years ago due to subsidence.

The site, once home to multiple families, has remained undeveloped since, despite earlier intentions to repurpose the area for community use.

The council, which previously committed to consulting residents on any future development of the land, has stated that the early stages of a proposal for new social housing are now underway.

The proposed scheme is expected to enter the formal Part 8 planning process by the end of 2025.

Under Part 8, the process will begin with the publication of notices in a local newspaper and at the site itself.

The public will then be able to view detailed proposals for a four-week period at both the Kildare County Council offices in Naas and online.

This will be followed by a two-week window for the submission of public observations or concerns.

The site has long remained a point of discussion in the community.

After the original housing was removed due to structural instability, families were relocated in various directions – some within nearby estates and others across the county.

Surveys were carried out on the land in the years that followed, but no significant development took place.

Residents have expressed a number of concerns about the proposed rebuild, particularly related to noise, lighting, and the impact on elderly neighbours.

In keeping with an agreement with locals agreed 25 years ago, Independent Ireland Cllr Ger Dunne has asked the council to plan a meeting between council representatives and residents to address these issues and answer concerns.

Locals were previously told the land might be passed to a youth centre, though that transfer never occurred.
