Dora-May Cousins' Newbridge Cafe Closure Highlights Local Business Struggles

Dora was hit with a €4,500 electricity bill last September.

Everything has "shot up".

That's according to Cafe Owner, Dora-May Cousins, who was forced to close her cafe in Newbridge last September after she was hit with a €4,500 electricity bill.

Speaking on Kildare Today, Dora said she noticed her electricity bill creeping up from last January.

She said she was totally shocked by the figure she was quoted.

Council rates and the rising cost of ingredients also contributed to the cafe closing for walk-ins and sit downs.

She said a bucket of mayo used to cost €21 but before Christmas it went up to €38.

She had up to six staff working for her and was "saddened" to see them go.

"It's all I can think about. It's just constantly in my head. It's draining," she said.

Dora is open for catering seven days a week and she also delivers.

She said she is available on Just Eat, Facebook and Instagram and that she's hoping to launch her own app soon.

"It's terrible for Newbridge. The big chains are winning," she said.
