A new report by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) projects that demand for GP appointments in Ireland will surge by approximately 33% by 2040, driven largely by a growing and aging population.
Plans have been granted for the transformation of a disused bank on Main Street, Maynooth, into a new doctors' surgery.
It comes against the backdrop of forecasts that Ireland will require up to 1,200 additional general practitioners over the next 15 years.
The proposal includes a change of use of the building's ground floor, currently a vacant former bank, into a GP surgery.
The first floor, which previously served as office space but is now empty, would be converted into a one-bedroom residential apartment.
