Disability-Related Welfare Payments Surge In Kildare Over Five Years

The number of Invalidity Pension recipients - for those permanently incapable of work and with sufficient social insurance contributions - has held steady at around 2,671 people.

There’s been a sharp rise in the number of people in Kildare receiving disability-related social welfare payments over the past five years.

Figures from the Department of Social Protection show that 6,529 people in Kildare are now receiving Disability Allowance - a  payment for people with long-term illnesses or disabilities.
 
That’s an increase of more than 1,000 people since 2020.
 
The number of Invalidity Pension recipients - for those permanently incapable of work and with sufficient social insurance contributions - has held steady at around 2,671 people.
 
Meanwhile, claims for Illness Benefit — a short-term payment for people temporarily unable to work — spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
The number of claimants in Kildare hit a high of 15,948 in 2022, before falling back to just over 5,300 this year.
 
The Blind Pension continues to have the lowest uptake, with just 29 recipients recorded in Kildare this year.
 
In the first quarter of 2020, 115 people in Kildare were in receipt of the Injury Benefit.
 
By the same period in 2025, that figure had dropped to 33 — a decrease of more than 70%.
