The Department of Defence and the Defence Forces have expressed difficulty in hiring enough lifeguards, which has delayed the pool’s reopening to local communities.
Despite €300,000 invested in refurbishments at The Curragh swimming pool, recruitment efforts for civilian lifeguards have failed, with two recruitment campaigns yielding no applicants.
The Curragh swimming pool, previously accessible to local schools, swimming clubs, and Defence Forces families, has remained closed to the public since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Responding to Senator Fiona O'Loughlin on behalf of Tanaiste Simon Harris, Kieran O' Donnell TD said: "The outstanding issue remains the recruitment of civilian lifeguards, which she very much alluded to in her contribution. Recent recruitment campaigns have so far, unfortunately, proven fruitless."
