Derelict Defence Forces Properties: Majority Of Uninhabitable Units Are In Kildare

Kildare South TD Sean O Ferghail said some of the properties could be refurbished and brought back into use.

Kildare has the worst housing situation among Defence Forces properties, with 62 units deemed uninhabitable, with one additional property vacant.

Minister for Defence Simon Harris confirmed that of 153 residential units controlled by his Department, 79 are uninhabitable nationwide.

Kildare accounts for the highest share of these derelict properties, despite also having 41 habitable units.

Kildare South TD Sean O Fearghail said some of the properties could be refurbished and brought back into use.

A report on the condition of vacant Defence Forces housing has been submitted to the Department of Defence.

"Once my officials and the Defence Forces have considered the contents, they will submit recommendations to me on the remediation programme to be undertaken," Tanaiste Simon Harris said.

He said the Defence Forces commissioned consultants to assess the condition of the Defence Forces vacant housing stock and its suitability for conversion/refurbishment to provide for additional single living-in accommodation for Defence Force personnel.
