Census 2022 Shows Over 50,000 Children In Primary/Secondary Education In Kildare

30,000 in primary, 20,000 in secondary education

There were almost 30,000 children in the county attending primary level school last year, according to the 2022 Census.

52.5% of children in Kildare got a lift in the car, 28.7% walked to school and 8.4% got the bus.

Leixlip had the highest number of children in the county walking to school at 54.7%, Naas had the highest number of primary school children getting the bus at 13.3%, with 66% of children in Allenwood getting a lift in the car, the highest in the county.

There were 20,770 students in Kildare in second level education.

39.6% of students in Kildare went to school in the car, 24.2% of students walked and 22.6% got the bus.

Kill had the highest percentage of children aged 13 to 18 travelling to school on public transport at 82%.

Kilcullen had the highest percentage of children in the county walking to school at 60.2% and almost half of students in Kildare Town travelled by bus, the highest in the county.
