Celbridge And Leixlip Among Areas To Join National Effort To Tackle Alcohol Harm

A national initiative aimed at reducing and preventing alcohol harm in communities will soon be launched in Kildare, with Celbridge and Leixlip among the 12 locations selected for the rollout.

The initiative will be rolled out today in Letterkenny.

Other areas include Balbriggan, Ballymun, Canal Communities (Dublin), Cork city, Drogheda, Listowel, Monaghan, Sligo, and Swords, reaching a combined population of approximately 500,000 people.

Ireland is the first country in Europe to introduce the Building Safer Communities initiative, a programme developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO), showcasing a commitment to addressing alcohol-related issues at a grassroots level.

Some of the measures include tightening restrictions on alcohol availability, enhancing and enforcing drink-driving regulations, and improving access to screening, brief interventions, referrals, and treatment services.
