Fine Gael Kildare North TD Joe Neville says later weekend services would benefit commuters, make public transport more viable, and help ease traffic congestion over time.

Irish Rail should keep its extended Christmas train timetable in place all year for commuter towns, according to a Kildare North TD.

Fine Gael TD Joe Neville says later weekend services would benefit commuters, make public transport more viable, and help ease traffic congestion over time.

He says the festive timetable has highlighted strong demand for later trains, with many people forced to leave events early to catch the last service.

Deputy Neville believes extending hours year-round would provide a more affordable alternative to rising taxi fares and improve weekend connectivity for towns on the Kildare, Maynooth and Dundalk lines.

He has written to Irish Rail and the National Transport Authority, suggesting the Christmas timetable be used as a pilot for permanent late-night weekend services.
