A bill seeking to remove Housing Assistance Payments in assessment of income when applying for civil legal aid is being debated in the Seanad tonight.
The bill has been tabled by Sinn Fein Senator, Lynn Boylan.
There are, currently, 2,398 active HAP tenancies in Kildare, and 59,821, nationwide.
HAP payments go directly to landlords, and not the tenant.
If anyone in receipt of the payment applies for civil legal aid, HAP is counted as part of their income.
Senator Boylan, speaking to Kildare Today, outlines why this is problematic.
