Ballyshannon Residents Win Court Battle Over Quarry Plan

The case will now return to An Coimisiún Pleanála for reconsideration.

The High Court has quashed a decision by An Coimisiún Pleanála to grant planning permission for a 32.2-hectare quarry at Racefield, Ballyshannon.

The ruling follows a judicial review brought by the Ballyshannon Action Group, which challenged the 2021 approval despite earlier refusals by Kildare County Council and a planning inspector who cited concerns over traffic, noise, and environmental impact.

The proposed development by Kilsaran Concrete would have been its fourth quarry in the Kilcullen area, situated on a greenfield site, close to homes, farms, stud farms and two primary schools.

The case will now return to An Coimisiún Pleanála for reconsideration.

A spokesperson for the Ballyshannon Action Group said: "After such a long time with the uncertainty of this hanging over all of us, locals here now have some peace of mind that our local environment and rural way of life is protected."
