Alone: Older People Who Are Lonely Twice As Likely To Die, Prematurely.

File image: Leinster House/RollingNews

The charity is appearing before an Oireachtas committee today.

Older people who are very lonely are twice as likely to die within six years as other people.

Alone also says it's concerned about the mental, physical and social challenges this group faces after the Covid lockdown.

The charity will tell an Oireachtas committee today older people are anxious as they re-emerge into society - despite widespread vaccination.

Consultant psychiatrist, Punchestown resident Patricia Casey, is of the Hermitage Medical Clinic in Dublin.

She agrees with Alone:

40 per cent of older people say their mental health was 'worse' or 'much worse' while cocooning.

Patricia Casey says she understands Alone's concerns
