Allenwood And Rathangan Wastewater Won’t Meet EU Standards Until At Least 2027

A feasibility study for Allenwood will not be completed until 2027.

Wastewater treatment plants in Allenwood and Rathangan are unlikely to meet European Union standards until at least 2027, despite both towns being flagged by regulators.

New correspondence confirms Uisce Éireann is still only at an early strategic assessment stage.

In Rathangan, upgrade works are planned for 2026 and 2027, with capacity increases still not confirmed.

The details were confirmed in response to an email to Kildare South Labour TD Mark Wall.

The delays follow findings by the Environmental Protection Agency, which reported that both towns failed to meet EU wastewater standards in 2024.

Almost half of the 14 towns found non-compliant nationally had met standards just a year earlier.

The EPA warned that poor maintenance is pushing compliant plants backwards.

It also found that 59 per cent of Ireland’s wastewater treatment plants failed to consistently meet pollution limits.
