The former wife of an ex-garda described enduring a series of harrowing experiences over the 12 years they were together, stating that he has irrevocably altered their lives.
Mark Doyle (38), with a previous address at Corbally Paddocks, Newbridge, admitted five counts of assault causing harm to Meav McLoughlin-Doyle and two counts of assaulting two of her sons causing them harm, on dates between September 2007 and August 2019.
Meav McLoughlin-Doyle said her former husband was "a respected member of the community but a monster in our home".
The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was presented with a detailed account of the abuse, coercive control, and domestic violence perpetrated by Doyle against his family over the 12-year period.
Doyle served as a garda in Cabra, Blanchardstown, and Ronanstown before being suspended and subsequently resigning following the initiation of a criminal investigation.
He confessed to various acts of violence against Ms McLoughlin-Doyle, including punching her in the head, causing damage to her eardrum, whipping her with his jacket, cutting her with a zip, kicking her while she was on the ground, pulling her hair, throwing a chair at her, slapping her, dragging her down the hallway, and choking her.
He repeatedly blamed her for his violent outbursts.
Doyle also assaulted her stepchildren, including firing a pellet gun at one of them and removing the pellet with tweezers while laughing.
In her victim impact statement, Ms McLoughlin-Doyle highlighted how Doyle was esteemed in the community but a terror at home.
She recounted an incident where, after a school expressed concerns over a child's disclosure, he arrived at a school meeting in his full garda uniform.
She expressed the aftermath of leaving him, describing a multitude of issues and pervasive problems.
She recalled being a confident, independent 26-year-old when she met him, but stated that he reduced her to "a shell of myself".
Judge Martin Nolan remanded the former garda into custody pending sentencing scheduled for tomorrow.
