Kildare has one of the highest numbers of primary schools yet to sign up for free hot school meals - despite being eligible.
Figures show 30 Kildare schools have still not applied for the expanded Hot School Meals Scheme for the 2025–2026 academic year.
The scheme now covers every primary school in the State, with 3,200 schools and 550,000 children eligible for hot meals following Budget 2025.
Nationally, 478 schools have yet to submit applications, even though participation is optional and funding is guaranteed once a school applies.
The figures are based on information available as of November 14th.
The Department of Social Protection says schools must opt in each year, select their own supplier under procurement rules, and choose their own start date.
Officials say they’re continuing to process applications as they come in.
Social Protection Minister Dara Calleary said the programme is not mandatory for schools.
"The decision to apply lies with the school principal and board of management," he said.
