The motorists tested positive for either alcohol or drugs

Gardaí in Kildare have arrested 18 motorists in the past week for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

In one case, a learner permit holder in Maynooth was arrested after testing positive for cannabis.

They also had no tax, insurance or NCT on their vehicle.

Another learner permit holder was stopped in Carbury and was found to have no insurance or tax.

When a roadside drugs test was carried out, the driver tested positive for cannabis and was arrested at the scene.

In another instance, an unaccompanied learner driver was detected speeding on the Rathbride Road near Kildare Town at the weekend.

When pulled over by An Garda Síochána, the driver was tested for drugs and was subsequently arrested after the test came back positive for
cocaine.

Penalty points have been issued in all cases and court appearances will follow.

In a message on social media, the Kildare Garda Division said "drink and drug driving is never worth the risk. One choice can lead to devastating consequences not just for you but for innocent lives on the roads."
