Covid-19 Cases Continue To Increase In Tokyo, Ahead Of Olympics

Opening ceremony due to take place 23rd July

Cases of Covid-19 are continuing to increase in Tokyo, as organisers prepare for the Olympics, which are scheduled to begin on 23rd July.

Yesterday, it was confirmed the Games will go ahead without any spectators at all, following a decision by the organising committee.

A state of emergency was also declared in the Japanese capital, which will remain in place until 22nd August.

The President of the Games, Seiko Hashimoto, says the situation is "regrettable" and has apologised to those who have purchased tickets.

Bloomberg journalist Gearoid Reidy, who is in Tokyo, says a cautious approach is being taken:
