Clondalkin Attack Upgraded To Attempted Murder As Commissioner Says It’s Not Linked To Leixlip Case

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly

He described the Clondalkin case - in which a 43-year-old woman was set on fire at her home - as “an absolutely horrendous attack”, now upgraded to attempted murder.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly has said the violent attack on a woman in Clondalkin is not linked to the separate Leixlip incident 28 hours earlier.

"Attacks like this are rare in Ireland, and obviously there was another attack not too long ago as well. And I just want to reassure the public they are not connected, those two things," he said.

He was referring to an axe attack on a woman in Leixlip.

He described the Clondalkin case - in which a 43-year-old woman was set on fire at her home - as “an absolutely horrendous attack”, now upgraded to attempted murder.

The woman remains in a critical condition with burns to 60% of her body.

Gardaí believe the Clondalkin attack stemmed from drug-debt intimidation, and no suspect has yet been identified.

The earlier Leixlip case involved a woman in her 50s attacked with an axe during an early morning assault by a man known to her, before he set the house alight and later took his own life.

The man entered her home through a window after he climbed up a roof.
